Remember to take a lot of photos from your favorite places. Part of having a good painting is loving your subject. It can really inspire you.

For those of you that have not painted. You will be doing other subjects to start so you won't be overwhelmed.

Atelier Interactive Acrylics

I attended a workshop for the Atelier Interactive Acrylics today. I really enjoyed the workshop thanks to Jennifer the resident artist for Chroma.

This sample we did was half with the Binder Medium half without. You can see the side with the medium did not absorb into the paper which made it easier to lift the color out compared with no binder.

This is the modelling compound. A very thick white paste to give texture to your painting.

If I were using any other acrylic once it was dry that would be it. We used the Binding Medium over the image that sealed it. Then we used Atelier Acrylic over the top of the whole image and let it dry. We sprayed water over the top and just lifted off the color allowing us to bring back the image.

These are only a few of the things we tried today. I really loved the texture of the paint very buttery and thick like oils. I all so liked how you can keep reworking the paint all day. There were several different mediums we tried. If you have the opportunity to try the Atelier Interactive Acrylics you might be pleasantly surprised.

Flowers at Longwood Gardens

Blue Poppy

Blue poppies are only grown in Alaska. They need very cold and long winters to be able to bloom. They look very similar to the red poppies that grow locally. I am glad to have had the opportunity to see them.

Blue Orchid is a one of a kind.

The orchid in the bud stage is injected with blue dye. The flowers are very striking. If the flowers were to bloom again in the future they would be the original color not blue.

I have also attached a view early in the painting. This view is before any of the details are done. I still have the ability to chance the composition if I am not satisfied with the painting at this point.

Painting Tip

When working with acrylics to slow down drying. I spray the canvas down with water first. Let sit for about 10 seconds and wipe down with rag. This allows me more time to blend.

Tip

If you paint either oils or acrylics. Don't skip on the paint that you place on your palette. At the end of the day you can freeze your paints. The acrylics need to be spritzed with water first and cover either medium with plastic wrap and freeze. Then when you are ready to paint again remove from the freezer the paints will be ready to use in 15 minutes.

Local Art Exhibits

This is a great opportunity to see the art of regional artists. Also if you are a artist this is a great way to meet other artists. Everyone is welcome to the opening reception to either exhibit.

The Lehigh Art Alliance is having their Juried Show At the Allentown
Art Museum. There will be over 170 pieces of art on exhibit at the up stairs gallery. The opening will be Sunday September 26 from 1:30 to 4pm. I have 2 oils and a mono-type in this exhibit. The show runs until Nov. 12.

Bethlehem Palette Club is having their juried exhibit which is now open until Nov.12. This exhibit is taking place at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem. The Artist opening will take place the first Friday in October.

Both of these oils are framed, the image size is 16" x 20" and will be on exhibit until November at Connextions Gallery on Northampton St. Easton http://www.connexionsgallery.net/

All 6 pieces are new and on exhibit for the first time.

The four mono-types shown above are the smallest I have done to date.

They are each 2"x"4" framed in a 8" x 10" off white frame.

Something to try.

This for those of you who have frames that don't quite work for you. Whether the frame is too dark or not the right color.

I started with the dark frame. I felt the frame was to strong and kept the eye away from the painting. So I painted the frame with a spay Rustolium graphite and a silver in top of that. I like Krylon spay paints better they seem easier to control how much is sprayed at a time. I used what I had at the time.

If you look at the silver frame it brings out the gray roof on the covered bridge as well as other grays in the cement part of the bridge. The frame is now becoming more a part of the painting.

Don't be afraid to make changes if you are not happy with your frame. You have nothing to lose and may be pleasantly surprised.

Raleigh NC

I wanted to share this unique piece of art. This picture is on exhibit at the Art Museum in Raleigh NC. It was a nice surprise to find a art museum free to the public with paintings from many well know artists.

You enter the room and of course you see the Mona Lisa upside down. But as you get closer, you get a different feeling all together. If you can't tell what is in the last picture, those are spools of thread.

On Exhibit at Gallery on High

I would like to tell everyone about the Gallery on High in Pottstown.

They have a nice gallery very diverse in style. They also have a school for all ages and are very much involved in the community.

The 2 oils and mono-type are in the group show untill August 14, 2010.

The title of this oil painting is called cold cellar. It is a 12" x 12" oil on canvas.

There are many ways to start a painting. This painting was started with washes of color, it almost looks like a water color.

My objective was to eliminate the white of the canvas.
This gives me the opportunity to make any changes to the composition early in the painting.

I start the oil thin and use thicker paint to finish it up.

This oil is on exhibit at the Connexions Gallery in Easton, PA until August 2010.
